Amending Chapter 12, “Vacant Structures and Deconstruction” Article I, 12-1, and 12-2(a) of the City Code to expand the boundaries of The Vacant Structure Building Program to require property owners of vacant structures within 1,000 feet of a public or private school or state-licensed childcare facility to register with the City.
On September 21, 2023, the City of San Antonio City Council passed an ordinance related to the the regulation of vacant buildings within the City by amending Chapter 12 entitled “Vacant Buildings and Deconstruction” Article I, 12-1, and 12-2 (a) of the City Code of San Antonio.
The following is a summary of the amendments to Chapter 12 under this ordinance: add definitions related to child-care facility, private school, and public school; expand the boundaries of the Vacant Building Program to require property owners of vacant structures within one thousand feet of a public or private school that offers instruction to students from prekindergarten to 12th grade or a state licensed child-care facility to register with the City; and, establish applicability and administration requirements to all vacant structures located within one thousand feet of a public or private school or a child-care facility that is open and in operation. Violations occurring within one thousand feet of a public or private elementary school, middle school, or high school, or a state licensed childcare facility shall be punished as provided in the revised City Code Chapter 12 Article I. All changes adopted through this ordinance are effective on January 1, 2024. Penalties in this revised City Code Chapter 12 shall be effective January 1, 2024.
